Yeshua the Passover Lamb

Zechariah exercised his prophetic ministry around the year 520 BC. He was called by God to help the Jewish people who had returned from Babylon to Jerusalem. They were more concerned with their material interests than with serving the interests of God.

He gave a very specific prophetic message:

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”(Zechariah 9: 9).

This prophecy was made more than five centuries before it was fulfilled. Let’s look at some detail of this prophetic message. In the first part it is said that Zion should rejoice over what would happen. “Rejoice greatly,” was the counsel of God. What should Zion rejoice in?

“Zion is called to rejoice in the promised salvation that will be fulfilled through the coming of his king, the Messiah. His coming will bring no gain or material advantages, as with the arrival of any terrestrial king … The Jews are exhorted to welcome their King, who comes with a view to their salvation

The people are challenged to look for a future promise and joy should already take care of each one’s heart in those days. The Messiah had not arrived, but already could live moments of great joy, in the expectation of what would happen. The Messiah would arrive!

Notice the characteristics of this Promised One: First: He will be righteous. The kings who were known to them were wicked, evil. Already this promised Savior comes justly. Nothing He does will have a spot of error or injustice. “The word justice appears more than 200 times in the Tanach. Can also be translated by fair and straight “

Exodus 12

1. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,

2. “This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you.

3. Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household.

4. And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb.

5. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats,

6. and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight.

According to verse 3 the Passover Lamb should be chosen and separated on the 10th of Aviv.

On the same way Yeshua, our Passover Lamb was anointed and separated on the 10th of Aviv.

John 12

1. Six days before the Passover, (9th of Aviv – 6 days before 15th of Aviv) Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

2. So they gave a dinner for him there (after sunset – 10th of Aviv). Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.

3. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

7. Jesus said; Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.

12. The next day (10th of Aviv) the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

13. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”

According to verse 5 of Exodus 12, the lamb should be examined so that would not be found any blemish on it.

On the same way after his triumphal entry in Jerusalem as the chosen Lamb, Yeshua was examined by the authorities:

– Chief priests and elders (Mathew 21.23);

“And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”

– Pilate (Mathew 27.1,2,11-14,17-26);

1,2 – When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.

11-14 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.”  But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

17-26 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!” So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood;[a] see to it yourselves.” And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged[b] Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

– Herod (Luke 23.6-12);

When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that he belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him. So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.

– Annas the high priest (Luke 3.2; John 18.13,24);

Luke 3.2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

John 18.13,24  13First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.24 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

– Caiaphas, the high priest (Luke 11.49-53)

John 11.49-53 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,  and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.  So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.

– Judas (Mathew 27.3-10);

Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus[a] was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel,  and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”

– The centurion (Mathew 27.54);

When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son[a] of God!”

– The criminal (Luke 23.39-43)

One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

None of them could find any blemish on Him!

Back to Exodus 12, according to verse 6, the lamb would have to be kept from the 10th to the 14th day of Aviv.

The Biblical reference from Daniel 9: 24-27

“Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.  Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time.  And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed. And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”

Requires a lot of calculations … From the decrees for the rebuilding of Jerusalem … which were several … It is not an easy count.
But the scholars say that it is because of it that the Jews can not read the book of Daniel alone … For whenever they do the counting, they end up on that day when Yeshua entered Jerusalem on a donkey, being hailed the Messiah .
